Gender Fluidity in Cosplay
My project portrays the idea of gender fluidity within the cosplay community, as well as exploring my own personal journey to understand and question my own identity. Cosplay is the ideal and safe space in with cosplayers can explore who they are, and have the freedom from gender restrictions to embody their favourite characters. The project consists of multiple cosplayers being represented by two contrasting images, one male and one female cosplay. These photos challenge the expectations that a cosplayer’s gender must match the character they are portraying. The approach to the project encourages those viewing the photos to confront their own ideas of what gender is and how it is represented. I use contrasting colours to fight the norms of the colour/gender relationship, making an enthesis on the fact that identity is fluid and self-expressive.
